So,
now I’m driving. It’s not hard, but it is a little strange.
First thing I’m getting on the speedway. And this is like any freeway,
divided, multilane, high-speed, it could be anywhere, But then within
20 or so minutes, We are completely out in the country. The read turns
into a very curvy, 2 lane, just like they were saying all the roads were
like. Some of the hills, with all of us, and all the bags, my little
car could barely make. The first stop was the “Café Utopia” this
little strange place on the side of the road boasting all organic food
and drink. It was very strange. So we had our snack here, and then kept
on trucking. AS we were driving, was passed through a seaside village,
and stopped for a little break, at Cable bay. Next we tried to stop at
these caves with glowworms. But there was nobody around, and apparently
the last tour of the day was under way. So that just meant that if we
wanted to go, it would cost more, and we would have to wait for half
an hour.
So
we took off, and through about catching them on the way back. Next we
stopped at the toilets in Kawakawa. These were the first public building
designed by Hundertwasser. I’ve told a lot of people about him,
from my trip to Vienna. In his later life, he moved to New Zealand for
the great environment. I had forgotten about this so when we got here,
I was much surprised and delighted. Then we made it to Paihia, and the
bay of islands. This was as far as we made on day one. We found a hostel,
met some more Americans on the BUNAC program (how many are there?), when
out drinking, and then went to bed.
